For most, it’s getting to the end of the 2013 Race Season. The 13.1 distance dominated our team this weekend as five of our athletes took to the start line!

Coach Ryan’s Athletes

Ginger Mills – Ginger is a new MTGE athlete and she raced the Disney Wine and Dine Half-Marathon. What started off as a normal run turned into anything but. I’ll let Ginger tell the story! Note: She loves to dress up for fun races and thus was running with a parasol!

Okay! First 3 miles awesome! But don’t ever run with a parasol

Mile 7.41 solid 9:15 pace– a 72 year old woman named Clara, fell- or tripped face first into the pavement.

I was the only runner to stop and help her up. Clara’s chin, forearms, & wrists were gushing blood. I told her to sit on the side of the course and I would run to medical at mile 8.3.

Ran to medical- ditched my parasol in the woods. I alerted a member of the medical staff on the bicycle to come with me to aid her.

I waited until she was bandaged up and I paced her 3:1 run/walk ratio until mile 12.5 . Then she begged me to leave her and run my pace. I ended up seeing her at the finish and she hugged me. 2:31 is what I finished in. Not the best time but I helped save someone, and I made a difference!”

Note: Parisol! And dressed as Mary Poppins

Arlene Benitez – No surprise to me, Arlene SMASHED her half-marathon, setting a brand new 26 minute PR at the Allstate Life Insurance Fort Lauderdale Half-Marathon. This end’s Arlene’s racing season where she had a fantastic year of setting PR’s in both triathlon and running and is pumped for 2014. Congrats!

Arlene and Gabriel post race!

Both Sarah Khzeri and Gabriel Serrao finished half-marathon’s as part of training. Gabriel is running his first marathon in December while Sarah is running Route 66 in a few weeks!

Kathy Fowler ran a very smart 10 miler in San Francisco.
